Just had a sudden inspiration to blog about .. year one PGP days..
For 3 years I stayed in PGP, and those were memorable times, and especially the first year. The guys from Blk 17, B2 circa 2002 were a fantastic bunch. We always felt we were one in a million. (Nearly) everyone knew everyone else, and really, in PGP, that's hard to find. We didn't just know one another, we did things together. And I'm not talking about the occasional "cluster outing" I know some clusters (try to) have. We really lived together. Somehow in that PGP basement, we had the so-called hall life, perhaps even better. hmm.. yeah.
We played together, man, did we play! Midnight counterstrike.. Oh yes, we can actually manage to get 4 out of 13 people in a cluster to play CS together. I think Mingtao was the best (sorry Garry, he is a little better than ya :P ). Oh, I remember me and Garry leaving our doors open, and we could have team comms that way..
A couple of times, a few of us gathered at Mingtao's room, and played guitar and the others sang. We talked of forming a band - The Basement Rats. I guess our basement was a pretty cosy place. We were the lowest level in the building, and the adjacent block did not have a basement 2.. so we were pretty isolated, like our own little dominion. Oh, being on the lowest level also meant we could climb in from the outside when the fire exit door is locked. It is supposed to be locked, but we leave it open for convenience.
For example, when we return from NTUC with bags of groceries. We did cook together sometimes, mainly me and Garry. It was fun, cooking together. We cooked all sorts of stuff, even Ramly burgers. We actually took care of our kitchen (until we burnt the tabletop, oops). I've never come across another cluster where the fridge was not filled with forgotten rotting stuff (Garry throws away unclaimed stuff liberally). So we had a neat and clean fridge. In PGP. That's amazing. Really.
During the exams, we would study together in the kitchen till late. When we felt like it, we made some food. Chipolatas from Georgies, some "pregnant fish" Aaron got (deep fried, very nice).. and *clap clap* it is agreed that Junbin makes the best toast. (Or maybe we agree, so we can always ask him to make toast for us..) =P
When we got too stressed, someone would say "lai leh, CS!".. The other hardworking ones would protest, but eventually give in. Then we'll say something like "Ok, but one hour only" and end up playing 3 hours.
Second sem, me, Garry, Junbin and Felicia did Innovations in Technology. The kitchen became our lab. The rest of the cluster had to bear with the kitchen table bearing unkitcheny items like Lego pieces, copper wires, unidentifiable metallic objects, very strong magnets (no, we kept those in our rooms), pliers, aluminum foil, and other strange objects. Every Tuesday night, I would be up till at least 3am. It's so indelible, I still remember our tutorial is on Wednesdays, 10am, at level 5 of USP block, can't remember the door number, but it's the second room.
We wrote a petition, hoping to stay together in our second year. Unfortunately, SARS struck, the administration was sent into a frenzy, and I'm sure trivial requests like ours would have been forgotten in somebody's Pending tray. So we were scattered. We would still hang out at one another's room in year 2 though.
Some of us still go out together sometimes. Now that we've all graduated. Not bad eh? For a PGP cluster.
Oh yes, the burnt tabletop. It was because we had a feast one night, and Garry had these disposable BBQ trays (aluminum trays with charcoal and wire mesh. So smart, we placed it on the table. The charcoal burned through the aluminum, then the tabletop..
