The price and reward of integrity

We went to buy new phones on Sunday at the Singtel Christmas Fair.

Some time ago, she was so envious of the Student promotion, with N6280 going for $99, that she was thinking if it was possible to get it. But I told her that we shouldn't even think about it, cos the fact is we are not students, so we must not try to get privileges intended for students.

On Saturday we went to the Fair, and more or less decided that we would both get 6280 ($198 2yr plan). Because I took very long to consider a lot of things, in the end we didn't buy on that day cos it was quite late.

So we went back on Sunday. And guess what?

Singtel slashed the price of N6280 to $98 overnight! That means we pay $200 lesser! So we both bought the phone. When we were going for dinner, she reminded me of our previous conversation - and that, God is good to us! We did the right thing, and did not covet what was not ours. And in the end, we were greatly blessed. For in all things, God works for the good of those who love him.

For the same reason, we've stopped buying student concession on our EZLink cards even though the cards still work. The fact that the card still works does not mean that you can buy the concession for your convenience. First of all, it's dishonest. Secondly, it's probably illegal. In any case, you will have a lot of explaining to do if the station master or bus captain stops you. I once saw a guy get asked to alight because the bus captain was not convinced he was a student.

I think the most memorable lesson where I learnt about this sort of integrious behavior was from Hanhui many years ago. We were still in the SMU group, and it was exam period. The CG was studying in a study room. I was going to the food court to get food. The food court is open to public so SMU students need to show their matric cards to get the student price. I was a NUS student, so I wanted to borrow a SMU matric card. I mean, it seemed to me like the natural thing to do. Yet our nature is, of course, sinful. Anyway, Hanhui turned to me and asked me, "Is your integrity worth 40 cents?"

Thank you, shepherd. Now I know my integrity is worth the price Jesus paid.
